Duties & Responsibilities
Purpose of the position:
- At the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR), you will have the chance to start and direct projects in human language technology and digital humanities that are related to your own areas of interest in linguistics. As a member of the SADiLaR network, you will collaborate closely with a group of researchers on both your own and commissioned projects. The dissemination of project findings at conferences on a national and worldwide scale will be supported and encouraged.
The Department of Science and Innovation’s national research infrastructure, SADiLaR, which focuses on human language technology and digital humanities, needs someone in this role to conduct research and development in those areas. Visit www.sadilar.org to learn more.
Minimum Requirements
- PhD in one of the following areas with a concentration on computational elements of linguistics: computational linguistics, natural language processing, general linguistics, human language technology, digital humanities, computer science, information technology, artificial intelligence, or related topics.
- Practical knowledge of how to utilize Python (recommended). It is also possible to take into account other programming languages applied to the field of computational linguistics.
- Previous experience as a student supervisor, co-supervisor, or in a mentoring or supervising capacity for an individual.
- Evidence of scholarly works that have undergone peer review.
- High level of computer literacy.
Other competency requirements
- Ability to effectively interact and communicate with the general public, students, colleagues, and other stakeholders at various levels and from a variety of backgrounds.
- The demonstration of language competence required to perform at your best in the many multilingual settings of SADiLaR.
