DEPARTMENT OF RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

HEAD: GRADUATE SUPPORT HUB

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The duties of the successful candidate will include, but are not limited to:
Academic support to postgraduate students:
  • Creating and implementing postgraduate academic support strategic plans that serve all faculties at UP and are consistent with the overall UP strategic plan;
    facilitating the completion of postgraduate degree programs within the timeframes specified for the respective degree programs;
    Managing a postgraduate help desk that serves as a one-stop-shop for postgraduate information and assistance. The help desk facilitates the provision of academic support that overcomes issues that official academic programs may not cover.
Graduate one-stop-shop/centre:
  • collaborating with and assisting professional service divisions in charge of postgraduate recruiting for the University in accordance with the University’s five-year goals and annual academic plans;
    directing the creation and upkeep of a web-based one-stop information portal for prospective and present students;
    Leading consultations with faculties and departments through appropriate research stakeholders;
Postgraduate bursaries and scholarship:
  • Managing and administering a portfolio of bursaries and scholarships aimed at increasing access to quality higher education at UP;
    Putting in place an efficient and transparent application, selection, and awarding procedure;
Postdoctoral fellowship programs:
  • Managing and monitoring the administration of postdoctoral fellowships worth millions of rand every year;
    Leading the overall portfolio implementation in terms of quality assurance and control, from fast application and review processes to extensive reporting systems and effect analysis.
    Compiling reports on several postdoctoral fellowships;
External funds for postgraduate scholarships and research:
  • Facilitating grant applications for external monies in order to improve access to education and capacity development at UP;
    Supporting faculties and departments directly or through appropriate stakeholders, such as the UP Department of Institutional Advancement;
Human Resources management:
  • Through job descriptions and procedure manuals, you can confirm and formalize the authorized delegated tasks.
    Managing and maintaining an efficient performance management system to develop and improve individual, team, and division performance;
    Attending to grievances in accordance with the Grievance Procedure standards;
    Managing the entire personnel recruiting, selection, and placement process;
    Managing the task allocation model for all sector employees;
Financial and administration management:
  • Managing operational budgets (telephone, courier, stationery, travel, etc.)
    Approving divisional purchases.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline; eight years of experience, three of which were in management, in teaching at the university level; conducting research (qualitative and qualitative);
    Postgraduate student supervision; research project management; researcher capacity building

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND BEHAVIORAL ATTRIBUTES):

Knowledge:

  • Research methodology; the panorama of higher education; research funding and grant applications;
    Plagiarism, intellectual property rights, and copyright; research and development; research ethics;

DETAILS ON SALARY
According to UP policy guidelines, the annual salary package would be appropriate for the incumbent’s level of appointment. UP participates in the BEST MED and UMVUZO medical aid programs, contributing 50% of the applicable monthly fee.
