The Department of Student Affairs is currently looking for a counselling psychologist to provide support to students. The ideal candidate will have experience working with students, be able to provide support in a confidential and non-judgmental manner and have a strong interest in psychology. The intern will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects related to counselling and student support, as well as learn about the department’s procedures and how they function.

  • Counselling psychologist intern (SEVEN POSTS, ONE-YEAR CONTRACT, 2023)
  • 96 000 Rand per year

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To support academic success and emotional wellness, the incumbent will provide counseling psychological services to students and young adults. This will involve psychotherapy treatments as well as the creation and identification of preventative and self-help programs with the goal of enhancing students’ and young adults’ academic progress as well as promoting well-being. The incumbent will be required to adhere to the HPCSA’s guidelines in the aforementioned areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The chosen applicant will take an active part in the following activities:

  • Services for adolescents and young adults in psychotherapy counseling to advance the academic success and emotional wellness:
    providing counseling (both individually and in groups) and presenting initiatives to improve students’ emotional wellness;
    as part of training requirements, providing therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and other client profiles at different schools and sites;
    meeting with the head of student counseling and other colleagues;
  • Creation of preventative, self-help, academic, and therapeutic programs in consideration of the requirements of pupils identified:
    creating new programs in response to the requirements identified;
    Co-operating and receiving feedback from internal role players by ways of applicable data and research;
  • services and programs for academic support and career testing:
    creating and providing programs and services for academic support;
    after testing or counseling, giving kids’ and parents’ input;
    to identify needs, issues, and potential solutions for programs and other pertinent interventions, consult academic staff, relevant internal and external role actors, and students;
  • Research: Participating in research to help the department create programs that are specifically tailored to the academic and emotional needs of the University of Pretoria student body;
  • advancing one’s knowledge through the study of pertinent literature and research in order to assure ongoing training and learning;
    taking part in case presentations for supervisors’ and/or other professionals’ evaluation;
    being subject to weekly supervision requirements;
  • Participating in institutional activities includes being a team member in the Student Counseling Unit’s networks inside the University and taking part in all of the unit’s operations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • a record of enrollment in a counseling psychology MA program at a school with accreditation;
  • registration with HPCSA as a student or intern;
  • compliance with the aforementioned regulations of the HPCSA;
  • completed the required coursework for the first year of an MA or MS in counseling psychology;
  • Successful practical training for the first year of the MA/MSc in Counseling Psychology.

AMOUNTS PAID
According to UP policy rules, the total yearly compensation for this position is R96,000.
