Duties & Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

As a senior software developer, you will work with SADiLaR’s technical team to build and maintain the organization’s technical and research infrastructure. With a focus on long-term sustainability, the team works to build infrastructure that is dependable and adaptable. SADiLaR encourages study and creation in South Africa’s fields of language technology and digital humanities. The infrastructure for the national Nodes and the main SADiLaR office (the Hub) is constructed, deployed, and maintained by the technical team. You can learn more at sadilar.org.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

A tertiary degree in computational linguistics, computer engineering, or computer science or information technology

EXPERIENCE

4 years of senior-level experience in the creation of websites, web services, or online APIs a senior-level programmer with more than 4 years of expertise in Java (preferred), Python, C, C, JavaScript, or other related languages Having advanced knowledge of databases like MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, or MongoDB, as well as general programming concepts

KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

Experience with Linux administration (particularly application deployment) on platforms like RHEL/CentOS, Debian-based distributions, and knowledge and skills to design, develop, manage, and deploy software solutions and services

RECOMMENDATIONS

Knowledge of cloud computing, DevOps, or machine virtualization, such as VMware, Vagrant, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, and GitHub Knowledge of technologies for hosting and deployments, such as Tomcat, Wildfly/JBoss, Apache, Docker, and Kubernetes Natural language processing and computational linguistics expertise

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES

Advanced ability to quickly learn new software; Ability to play numerous roles in a team, such as coaching; Ability to work independently or take the lead on smaller tasks; spirited and independent

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Software creation and maintenance: Create the necessary software for each project in the Hub and Nodes.
Users of the software should be supported. Existing software systems should be maintained. Web development and support should be provided.
Create and maintain SADiLaR web services’ optimal operation.
When necessary, communicate with the Technical Manager and Research Manager to ensure that the online services are operating properly.
The yearly total compensation package shall be in accordance with NWU policy guidelines and consistent with the level of appointment as stated in the job posting.
