WHY ARE WE CALLED THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT?
The Department of Welfare was renamed “The Department of Social Development” in July of 2000.
The Department of Social Development is our official name:
As a result of our dedication to social change,
- We are dedicated to the objective of social transformation inherent in the idea of social justice and our Constitution’s Bill of Rights. We strive to improve the lives of the poor, disadvantaged and disenfranchised in our society.
Our mission is to alleviate poverty and promote social inclusion.
- Our mission is to formulate and monitor the implementation of social policy that both generates an enabling environment for and results in poverty reduction. We ensure that all residents of our country have access to social protection and welfare services. We conduct research to produce the social indicators required for program implementation and accountability to the public.
Because our work is built on collaboration and the Batho Pele service delivery principles
- All of our work necessitates comprehensive and ongoing collaboration with people from all walks of life. Our programs work in tandem with those of other government departments and agencies across the board. We collaborate with NGOs, faith-based organizations, businesses, organized labor, and other stakeholders. Batho Pele (People First) principles are important to us, and we use them to improve service delivery to our clients and the general public.
Because our efforts foster self-reliance and are founded on unity.
- As social workers, we act in a spirit of solidarity with the entire human race. By providing circumstances for sustainable livelihoods, we hope to empower communities and foster self-reliance. This entails broadening the range of options available to residents.
As a result of the breadth of our human services,
- Advocacy, promotion, prevention, care, mitigation, and palliation are all part of our development, social protection, and social welfare services, which cover the whole life cycle of a human being
