Accommodation for students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

Edgewood
  • Residences are offered on the Edgewood campus. Catering and self-catering alternatives are available. On campus, 631 students live in 11 dormitories. Women make up 55% of the population and are housed separately from men. Single and double rooms are available. Some apartments offer self-catering options. Access control doors are installed in all homes. Graduate students have access to five additional apartments, each of which can accommodate five students.
Howard College & Medical School
On-Campus Residences
  • The apartments of Howard College and Medical School in Durban house approximately 2162 students. There is huge competition for available positions and not all candidates may be accepted. The two residences are Charles Smith Hall and Albert Luthuli Hall. Charles Smith Hall consists of 12 different homes conveniently located near major academic buildings, banks, shops, and the medical school. The six-story Cluster Residence and Tower Residence include Albert Luthuli Hall. This complex is located in the western part of the Howard College campus, away from the university buildings but next to most sports fields and the Old Mutual sports center. Access control, lounges and TV rooms, intercoms, telephone booths, and parking are at your disposal. Student Residences at UKZN The beautiful campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal offers students the opportunity to study in luxury. Off-Campus Residences
Mixed Gender Residence – St Hillier
  • St Hillier apartments include furnished two and three-bedroom apartments. Each student has his own bedroom. The living room, kitchen, and bathroom are shared by all residents. There is also a parking lot and coin laundry. St. Hillier is located in Ambiro, directly opposite Queensmead Shopping Center and a short walk from the medical school campus. Accessible via the Howard College bus route.
J V Smit Residence
  • This property has 90 large single rooms as well as entertainment and study areas and tennis courts. It’s a catering business. Laundry facilities and parking are available. JV Smit is close to the medical school campus and a bus route connecting Howard College and downtown.
Pietermaritzburg
  • The student residence houses approximately 1,640 students. A third of her enrolled students live in one of four student residences. For assistance with off-campus housing, please contact the Student Housing Helpdesk.
Petrie Hall Of Residence
  • Petrie Hall is primarily a 1st and 2nd-grade dormitory. Eleanor Russell Hall, University Hall, and Lodge are three large homes near Science Block, Administration, Student Union, Library, Tennis Court, Shops, Post Office and Banks. The Student Committee is responsible for the smooth running of student life in all dormitories.
William O’Brien Hall Of Residence
  • The William O’Brien residence hall (male) is located on campus and consists of single rooms spread over six blocks with communal kitchens. The residence’s sports program, senior and junior lounges, a huge community play area, and visitor reception hall are all suitable for extracurricular activities. A braai area, car repairs, washing areas, and secure parking for all residents’ vehicles are also available.
Malherbe Hall Of Residence
  • The Malherbe Residence (male and female) is located across Durban Road from the University Gate. Common areas and the TV lounge are unisex. An open space of trees, shrubs, and grass surrounds the house and provides spaces for students to play ball games and rest. A barbecue area is also available. The student hall, science block, old art block, shops, banks, and post office are all within walking distance. However, the New Arts Block, Commerce, Law, Agriculture, and Life Sciences Blocks are a 10-minute walk. Brucian House and Robleigh House are the names of Malherbe Flats (a graduate student). With 3, 4, or 5 bedrooms, these are ideal for small groups of students who want to live together. You cannot share a room with another person. Most rooms are fully equipped and independent. There are several lockable garages for rent.
Denison Hall Of Residence
  • Denison (men and women) is located on the old golf course section of the campus in a quiet park-like setting. Denison has its own kitchen complex and clubhouse with a huge common room and the Denison bar. The house has a gym, TV, billiards, and table tennis.
Westville
  • The Westville campus offers off-campus and self-catering apartments, as well as on-campus residences where meals are provided on request.
On-Campus Residences
  • There are 1810 students on campus. There is huge competition for available positions and not all candidates may be accepted. The four residential blocks are S-Block, R-Block, P-Block, and O-Block. The O-Block is reserved for women only, while the others are mixed. Each house has access control, television rooms, and parking. Except for O-Block, which still contains a restaurant, all apartments are self-contained.
Off-Campus Residences
  • 713 students live in off-campus housing. Competition is fierce and it is impossible to accept all applications. These units are fully equipped. If a single room is available, PhD students can apply for it. All students live in double rooms. Kitchen and bathroom are shared by all tenants. Bedford Hall and the Sun Savile Mansion are located on Hospital Road in the city. Dunstaple Heights is located on Varsity Drive and Santa Cruz for graduate students is located on Reservoir Hills.
Admission to Residences
Applications
  • For admission to university residence, local first-year applicants must apply to the Central Applications Office (CAO). A separate application is not required. It is not always possible to host a student in the place of his choice.
    International
     students of the University of KwaZulu-Natal must apply for accommodation.
    The
     deadline for graduation applications is September 30th.
Selection
  • Enrollment is based on need, academic potential, financial ability, and distance from home.
    The university cannot guarantee that you will be assigned to a dormitory, so if accepted into the university, applicants may be required to arrange off-campus accommodation.
    A Resident Code of Conduct is required for all students.
Residence Fees
  • In 2021, accommodation costs would consist of an annual living allowance of R25 892. For local students, the deposit is R2750 (2018). Meals are not included in this cost. (A year’s worth of food costs around R23 980.) Before they can register, international students have to pay 25% of their accommodation costs. Bed linen is not provided in student accommodation.
Meals
  • Self-catering facilities are available in all homes in Pietermaritzburg, Howard College, Edgewood and Westville. Students are expected to prepare their own meals. Students are required to bring their own crockery, cutlery, pots and other cooking utensils. The campus also has gastronomic options. On the Westville campus, meals are served in on-campus apartments. Edgewood offers self-catering accommodation. UKZN Student Residence
Linen, Laundry, And Cleaning
  • Students must bring their own linens and linens. Each apartment has its own laundry room. Students are also required to clean their own rooms.
Vacations
  • Students can apply to stay in a dormitory while on vacation. Fee information is available from the dormitory office.
