Emergent Literacy – EML1501

The goal of this module is to provide student teachers with the knowledge, skills, and techniques needed to teach Emergent Literacy to a Foundation Phase class. This module will expand students’ understanding of emergent literacy and the various forms it can take. Qualifying students will understand the significance of emergent literacy. By engaging with theories of language development, the student will be able to promote emergent literacy and develop the language skills of learners. and applying them to comprehend various contexts in which teaching and learning are constructed and implemented They should be able to gather information from various sources and assess its relevance to learners and the context of learning.

Gr R Life Skills: Science and Technology (offered from 2024) – GST2601
Diploma Year module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Purpose: Qualifying graduates will be able to teach relevant science and technology concepts and process skills within the Foundation Phase curriculum. They will also be able to encourage Foundation Phase students to experiment, discover, and explore their surroundings by employing fundamental scientific processes such as observing, classifying, experimenting, predicting, drawing conclusions, and communicating their findings to others. Furthermore, qualifying graduates will develop self-reflective practices in order to mediate the Science and Technology curriculum through the use of appropriate teaching strategies and methodologies for various contexts. Mediation resources will be obtained from various sources (online and print) and tailored to specific contexts.

Teaching practice II (offered from 2023) – TPG2602
Diploma Year module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12

Pre-requisite: TPG1501
The goal of this module is to supplement qualifying students’ learning from teaching practice 1. (WIL). Through reflective practice, qualified students will integrate theoretical principles, and disciplinary and pedagogical learning into their daily classroom practice. In a Grade R environment, this includes planning, teaching, and assessing learning. Furthermore, qualified students will encourage their students’ holistic development through a variety of age, developmentally, and culturally appropriate activities. They will be expected to gather information from various sources (online and print) to aid in their learning. Where possible, qualifying students will collaborate with the school management team, mentor teacher, learners’ parents, and/or peers. Furthermore, qualifying students will be exposed to the larger school context and, if necessary, will participate in extra-curricular activities.
