Duties & Responsibilities

Basic Function of Position:
  • In order to successfully respond to natural disasters and complex situations around the world, the Bureau for Humanitarian Aid (BHA) serves as the primary USG coordinator for international disaster assistance. BHA does this by using the knowledge and special abilities of other USG agencies. BHA offers the most vulnerable communities life-saving humanitarian aid, including food, water, housing, emergency healthcare, sanitation and hygiene, and crucial nutrition services. The 14-country Southern Africa Regional Office, which is based in Pretoria, South Africa, has a regional budget of more than $289 million for the fiscal year 2021. The BHA Humanitarian Advisor will support and oversee programs in 14 countries, including Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, as a key member of the USAID/BHA Southern Africa Regional Office.
  • Along with BHA, other USAID, and/or U.S. Embassy personnel stationed in those nations, they will monitor the humanitarian needs and conditions in their respective areas of responsibility. They will also make recommendations regarding the declaration of a disaster and the appropriate BHA response when the necessary conditions have been met. Up to 50% of the time spent on the job will be spent monitoring BHA emergency, risk reduction, and resilience initiatives and evaluating multi-sectoral humanitarian circumstances in the area.
